Abstract :
Interrelations between measures of intelligibility yielded by the Diagnostic Rhyme Test (DRT) and measures of speech quality yielded by the Diagnostic Acceptability Measure (DAM) were examined for a representative sample of modern speech coding systems and techniques. Gross measures of intelligibility and acceptability were found to be highly though imperfectly correlated. Further analyses elucidated the nature of the dependence of acceptability on intelligibility.
