The author describes how the provision of ancillary services in Northern Ireland is achieved via pragmatic arrangements built into existing electricity supply contracts. Future provision can be readily met by a minimal functional specification approach without the burden of the investment and administration overheads associated with ancillary service contracts and settlements procedures.
