Abstract
Most of the high order tests for local controllability have geometrical interpretations in terms of the behavior of vector fields which describe the control system. In two dimensions we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for controllability from the relevant geometry. In higher dimensions, similar necessary conditions are no longer sufficient. The geometrical reasons why this occurs are explored.
