Abstract :
Next generation satellite communication networks are being designed to be all IP-based and support multimedia traffic. Traditional satellite network protocol stack is based on independent layers, precluding the adaptation of each layer to dynamically changing system environment. Exploitation of cross-layer protocol optimization and engineering leads to efficient performance and to end-to-end QoS provisioning. In this paper we propose a cross-layer design approach, focusing on physical layer interaction with other layers, using OPNET simulation environment. Our major emphasis is on studying the effect of fading on dynamic resource allocation (PHY-MAC layer) and interaction of PHY and Transport layer using TCP/UDP protocols. Our system model includes a DVB-S2 for forward link and DVB-RCS for return link. The simulation results demonstrate the influence of fading on resource allocation, delay performance for multimedia traffic, e.g., video conferencing, voice and data.
