Abstract :
Within an enterprise system, there exist many specific service-based metrics that apply to end-to-end monitoring and management of information. To assist network operators and service providers in understanding end user issues, it is helpful to group related service-based metrics together into larger metric categories. This paper addresses the lack of consistent and meaningful metric terminology for network operations personnel who manage enterprise systems running multiple protocols over a diverse set of multi-technology components that must implement distributed applications methodologies in a network centric (net-centric) environment. This paper establishes metrics categories into which the information collected during the monitoring activities may be grouped, and it defines and rationalizes these categories. Examples are provided to demonstrate the usefulness of this categorization for enterprise systems.
