Abstract
Africa-1000 is a program to provide safe water to thousands of villages in Africa. It is a formidable effort and needs the support of the international scientific community. Africa-1000 is a program of digging and drilling thousands of wells which would be equipped with photovoltaic, windmill and/or handpumps, to produce water for drinking and irrigation and electric power for health centers, lighting, vaccine refrigeration, communication and basic village industry. When fully operational, the program will provide water to 1000 villages per year, hence its name. The authors describe the main concepts of Africa-1000 including the four phases of the project: program design, pilot projects, operations and control center, and large-scale program implementation
