Abstract :
Energy is crucial to human sustenance and development. India, being no exception to this, has been concerned about its energy requirements and self-sufficiency since independence. However, oil shock periods in 1973 and 1979-80 and, more recently, the Gulf war have led India to formulate a strategy for its growth and development in the present as well as the future. Since then emphasis has been on: (i) increasing indigenous generation; (ii) energy management; and (iii) development and growth of renewable energy. Financial and technical constraints have been the major bottlenecks in India´s endeavours to meet all its requirements. This paper is an attempt to focus on India´s present energy scene and its future perspectives
