Abstract :
Trellis-coded modulation (TCM) is a method of implementing error correction coding without decreasing the data rate or increasing the channel bandwidth. TCM is a combination of M-ary modulation and error correction coding. This paper investigates the performance of a low spectral efficiency TCM system. The effects of both additive white Gaussian noise and pulse-noise interference (PNI) are considered for a TCM system with quadrature phase-shift keying modulation and rate r = 1/2 convolutional encoding. The TCM system shows much better than expected performance and significant resistance to PNI, and performance improves as the number of convolutional code memory elements increases.
