Abstract :
The authors discuss spiral-mode microstrip antennas. This class of antennas is wideband, with performance comparable to that of the cavity-loaded spiral and sinuous antennas, but has high efficiency and low profile like the microstrip patch antenna. In addition, the authors believe that the mode-switching and beam-steering capability of the multimode version of this antenna will most likely open up new design concepts, enhance performance, and add new features in future systems. They introduce the performance of several versions of this class of antennas, and analyze its consequential impact on system designs
