Abstract :
An optical-fiber transmission system which operates at a line bit-rate of 2.4 Gb/s is described. It is in full accordance with the guidelines of the CCITT recommendations for the Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH), accepting up to sixteen 155.52 Mb/s STM-1 (Synchronous Transport Module-1) streams. Alternative tributary plug-in units permit simultaneous multiplexed transmission of STM-1 signals in either optical or electrical form, or of plesiochronous electrical input signals at the standard 140 Mb/s rate. The system meets full production standards and has the operating margins, network-management, and auxiliary-channel facilities required by modern digital transmission networks
