  • Abstract
IEEE802.11, the widely used wireless LAN standard, employs RTS/CTS handshake to avoid a packet collision with the transmissions from hidden terminals. Although RTS/CTS handshake effectively reduces packet collisions with hidden terminals, it also increases transmission overhead of IEEE802.11. In this paper, we discuss transmission overhead of IEEE802.11 induced by RTS/CTS handshake, and propose a new RTS/CTS On/Off control method for mitigating transmission overhead of IEEE802.11. Results from computer simulations confirm that our proposed method improve throughput performance in around the saturated traffic environment.
