Abstract
WCDMA is one of the candidate technologies recommended as a future radio system (FRS) solution in the collaborative FAA/Eurocontrol future communications study (FCS) phase II study report. To further analyze the suitability of WCDMA as a FRS solution, one focus of the current ITT FCS study activities is assessing how air traffic data link services can be accommodated by WCDMA functionalities. This analysis provides both logical and functional mapping of the WCDMA network components to the communications, navigation, and surveillance/air traffic management (CNS/ATM) system elements; selected air traffic data link services defined in the communications operating concept and requirements (COCR) are mapped into WCDMA functional interactions. Results of this study support the assessment of cost, certification and standardization impact for WCDMA by determining the necessary elements of the architecture and protocol stacks required to provision COCR services.
