Abstract

PacTel Corporation evaluated the performance of various laptops, modems and cellular phones for mobile data communications. Commercial versions of different modems and protocols were tested over a combination of analog cellular network and PSTN. Tests were conducted from a moving mobile in a high usage cellular system. Results indicate that the analog cellular network may be commercially utilized for data transmission in the realm of 1200 bits/second with existing modem products. For reliable transmission at data rates above 1200 bits/second changes (enhancements) to existing protocols and/or modulations techniques appear to be necessary
