Abstract
Commercially available zinc oxide varistors were tested for possible use as a compensating device for linear induction accelerators. The tests showed an increase in voltage regulation ability of 300% to 500% when compared with purely resistive compensation techniques. In addition, the drive-pulse rise-time and fall-time steepened, increasing the effective flat-top duration of the pulse. These results indicate that compensation with varistors may also reduce overvoltages due to beam-timing errors
