  • Abstract
The engineering design and predicted electrical performance of a 20-60 kW average power modulator system are presented. The system consists of a self-contained prime power subsystem feeding a 20 kW/ft 3 DC-DC power conditioner, which charges an intermediate storage capacitor bank to 45 kV at rep-rates up to 100 Hz. Upon firing the bank output switch, a resonant transformer pulse charges an irrathene dielectric strip Blumlein to 400 kV. The Blumlein delivers a 20-60 ns pulse to a matched 20 Ω load. The state-of-the-art switching high voltage insulation system, thermal management, and switch purging techniques are traceable to demonstrated technology. Electrical and thermal properties are identified and discussed for both 20 and 60 kW systems suitable for near-term ground-based tech-demos and far-term airborne or satellite platform applications
