Abstract :
Storrs, where the main campus of the University of Connecticut is located, is a small rural community. Yet, as I walk to work from my home, I rarely see bicyclists on the road. I recall once asking a northern European graduate student why he did not ride his bike to work, and he told me that the bicyclists around here did not feel safe sharing the road with cars (except where there are physically separate bike lanes). Unlike Europe, drivers here often do not look out for or slow down for bicyclists. Now, at least, one car company with roots in northern Europe is doing something to address this problem [1].
