  • Abstract
The author proposes an architecture for a SONET (synchronous optical network) backplane, specifically considering its use as a BISDN (broadband integrated services digital network) UNI (universal network interface). ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) traffic and its arbitration requirements are particularly addressed. The architecture also encompasses STM (synchronous transfer mode) transport, as detailed in the work of the IEEE P1396 standards committee. Specifically, careful consideration is to be given to physical and operational aspects of the bus at these bus speeds. Many telecommunication operational and physical design issues have also been considered in the iteration of this architecture. The backplane should also be usable in STM, 802.6 and hybrid cases
