Abstract
Progressive image transmission (PIT) techniques using the multiresolution wavelet decomposition are extended to other wavelet packet bases. Theses techniques are based on progressive selection and progressive quantization of subbands, with fixed or varying wavelet decompositions for the successive stages of transmission. The coding parameters of these stages are optimized under rate constraints, in accordance with two different approaches: a step by step optimization, and a global optimization for the whole transmission. Extending PIT techniques from multiresolution decomposition to other wavelet packet bases brings improvements in the successive qualities of reconstruction of an image
