Abstract :
The authors present the results of a simulation study exploring the performance of various error control schemes in a fast packet switching network. Three of the most popular error control schemes are examined: end-to-end, link-by-link, and a combined link/edge scheme. The results of the simulation study suggest that the end-to-end error-control scheme provides superior performance for fast packet switching networks in real-world environments. In fact, when high-speed, low error rate transmission media is utilized for network implementation, the end-to-end error control scheme provides lower network delays for almost all traffic intensities
