Abstract :
The roof styles of the outpatient building of T´ai-Yuan Fu Hospital for Men are unique and diverse: some are combined flush gable roofs with gable and hip roofs, some are deformed pyramidal roofs and the others are combination of the traditional Chinese eave and the Western pediment. All of these roof styles show the unique characteristics of the Chinese architectures blended with the Western ones in pre-modern times and the distinctive endemicity. The building is an excellent example of pre-modern architectures. It was not only a simple innovation in technology and art, but also the product of interaction and conflict of the Chinese and Western culture in pre-modern times. The building has the unique beauty because the traditional materials, construction methods and forms were endowed with new functions and aesthetic conceptions through the roof styles.
