Abstract
This paper presents a method to estimate the parameters of an under-excitation limiter model. The parameters were obtained from the limiting characteristic and the steady-state analysis of the model. The characteristic had been obtained during a startup test of a generation unit. The model presented in this work was inspired by a model proposed by the IEEE Task Force on excitation limiters and was adjusted to represent the limiter. The structure and the parameters of the model were validated by comparing the startup results with simulation results for the same test. The under-excitation limiter model with a straight-line characteristic is valid to represent the operation of the limiter. The use of the startup data for the generation unit made the testing of the equipment unnecessary while keeping the unit in operation.
