Abstract
This paper proposes the use of flexible radio systems including short-wave radio for their long range and satellite links due to their wide coverage in providing good quality communication to the rural areas of Africa. It proposes the use of code division multiple access (CDMA) because of its ability to deal with fading and interference problems which are common in short-wave radio. For a long time the CDMA receiver was complex and difficult to implement but recent developments have made it possible to produce the CDMA receiver on a single chip
