Abstract :
This paper explores the applicability of using artificial intelligence tools in the field of power quality. The definition of power quality and its importance in the current power market are included. The necessity for using intelligent tools in power quality analysis is established, and individual intelligent paradigms are discussed. The paper focuses on introducing the concepts of adaptive fuzzy techniques, and an application involving an adaptive neuro-fuzzy and expert system tool currently under development. An overview of documented intelligent systems as being applied to power quality analysis is referred to. The design of prototype adaptive fuzzy systems, and the preliminary results of applying such systems to sample power quality problems, are included in part II of the paper
