This paper discusses the digital signal processor (DSP) requirements for sophisticated communications receiver functions such as matched filter reception, interference/noise reduction and convolutional decoding operations. It assesses the processor complexity requirements based on general purpose DSP microprocessors and application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) chipsets
