Abstract :
Future mobile radio systems require a large number of compact and inexpensive base stations as well as rather complex interference resistant receivers. To achieve low operation and maintenance costs, it is favourable to keep the number of sites with costly signal processing hardware and software to a minimum, which is, however, in contradiction to the just mentioned requirements. This contradiction can be solved when remote antennas, which are connected to central base stations, are deployed. The basic concepts for applying remote antennas to mobile radio systems are considered. Furthermore, the beneficial exploitation of intracell macrodiversity are discussed. Simulation results for both a third generation mobile radio system concept termed JD-CDMA (joint detection code division multiple access) and the most successful second generation mobile radio system GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) are presented
