Abstract
An application of the synchronous code division multiple access (S/CDMA) technique in intensity modulation-direct detection fiber-optic local area networks is presented. The design method of the codewords of the optical orthogonal codes (OOC) based on the extended set concept is modified to design codes suitable for the S/CDMA system. It is shown that using shifted codewords and synchronized operation among the users reduce the length of the codewords compared to A/CDMA. Hence, better bandwidth utilization and increased number of the users in a fiber-optics local area network can be realized at the expense of increased complexity
