Abstract :
Passive optical network (PON) has been widely used in the access network around the world. High power consumption brings challenges and also opportunities for building a green network in the future. Setting ONUs into sleep state is the most cost-effective manner. Our research first focuses on the characteristics for a variety of sleep states, and then introduces a novel sleep mode which is more flexible in adjusting ONUs into suitable sleep states. Simulation results show that our design can save 57% energy on average and the time delay is around 1ms which can meet the requirements of most service.
