Abstract
Summary form only given. Optical fiber transmission systems, that historically have enjoyed phenomenal growth, are currently being revolutionized by optical amplifier and wavelength-division-multiplexing technology that enable optical networks. The evolution of optical networks promises to expand the reach and functionality of photonics while meeting society´s insatiable desire for reliable, cost-effective higher capacity communication.
