Abstract :
A theoretical model is developed to accurately determine the rise in the temperature of the core, the dielectric insulation, and the soil surrounding a single-phase distribution cable. The model is capable of predicting the temperature distribution as a function of electric current and cable properties. The model is validated experimentally for an XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) distribution cable. The temperature of the insulation of the cable in the ground is higher than that of the cable in air for the same current level. The particular cable used can carry up to 1.2 of the rated current in air without exceeding the maximum allowable temperature
