Abstract :
The authors report the breakdown characteristics of a coaxial cylindrical SF6-filled gas-gap as well as the surface flashover characteristics of disk-type spacers subjected to pulsating DC voltage of either polarity superimposed on 50-Hz alternating voltage. In the pressure range of 0.1 to 0.2 MPa, the breakdown strength is almost independent of pressure, and for pressures above 0.2 MPa the breakdown strength decreases at a constant rate with increasing pressure, suggesting that the streamer mechanisms may be at work. As the percentage of superimposed AC component in the applied pulsating positive direct voltage increases, the peak BDV and FOV decrease; this effect is opposite for negative polarity. With negative polarity, the peak BDV and FOV are lower than those for positive polarity for superimposed AC components less than 100%
