Abstract :
The use of series compensating capacitors in Transmission line has many advantages specially increasing the power transfer capacity of long transmission lines. However, they bring with themselves significant protection challenge especially for distance relays. This paper presents a fault zone detection method in series compensated transmission lines using two-ended data. The presented algorithm is based on computing the dc component of line current. The accuracy of the proposed algorithm has been tested on a 300km, 400kV series capacitor compensated transmission line using PSCAD software.
