Abstract
Indications of different degrees of salt contamination were obtained experimentally in order to estimate the occurrence of flashover in insulators. These data are then used to find a method for estimating the best period and the most suitable data for recoating silicone grease. Preliminary experimental results are presented on the effective life of silicone grease coating for preventing salt contamination. The experimental results clearly indicate that, when voltage is applied to a contaminated insulator, the through leakage current is not low even for a slightly contaminated insulator, but its waveform is normal. If the value of contamination is increased, a pulsed current component appears in its current waveform
