  • Abstract
We have designed and fabricated dispersion-shifted fibers, using the outside vapor deposition (OVD) method, with effective areas as large as 80 /spl mu/m/sup 2/ or more and bending performance similar to step-index single-mode fibers. Two types of designs have been realized. The first type has a triangular core and an additional ring. The second has two off-axis rings, where the first ring has the same function as the triangular core which shifts the zero-dispersion wavelength into the 1550-nm window. However, the dual-ring profile has a flat-top field distribution, which results in several percent larger effective area than the triangular core profile.
