Abstract
In MPEG-2 HDTV, the bandwidth and memory size requirements are very large. We present a simple algorithm that requires low complexity hardware for the MPEG-2 decoder memory reduction. Our algorithm is based on the Haar wavelet transform (HWT), with no multipliers needed. Following the HWT, we use a variable-length coder to compress the data before storing them in the memory for future references. Our technique cuts down the memory requirement from 12 Mbytes to 7 Mbytes for the 4:2:0 HDTV application.
