Abstract
The noise near the discontinuities in the surface property data is described. The author shows that the noise in surface property data cannot be modeled simply as spatially white Gaussian noise as is generally assumed in discontinuity detector formulations. Near the discontinuity there are significant translations between the discontinuity indicated by the surface property data and the actual, though unknown, discontinuity position. The results suggest that the noise models used in discontinuity detectors bear little relationship to the actual noise in surface property data
