Abstract
Given the increasing number of ontologies available on the web, it becomes crucial to establish, as far as possible, a Reference ontology for each knowledge domain, to attenuate in a concrete way the many problems generated by information heterogeneity on one hand and to realize information share and reuse on the other hand, all purposes for which ontologies were originally created for. The present work is an attempt to better understand what is so called “Reference ontology” by gathering and analyzing almost all what has been written on this emerging ontology type.
