Abstract :
In telecommunication application there is a tendency to reduce the backup-times from mainly 3 to 8 hours down to 30 minutes to 1 hour. To fulfil the requirement for long lasting batteries in this application field the battery must be at least a ten years system with the ability to supply high currents on short term discharges. The combination: service life > 10 years and high rate discharge 50 % of C10 at the one hour rate requires a new design of a telecommunication battery. The system described in this paper fulfils the above mentioned requirements and applies also construction features and manufacturing experiences which are approved in the telecommunication application. The system is based on a VRLA flat-plate-cell with gelled electrolyte. The design and testing of this cell is described
