Abstract
The 2008 SaRS Annual Conference revealed a nationwide shortfall in both safety and reliability management skills. Coherent competence assessment across all industrial domains has become a strategic priority. A review of known schemes (nuclear, railways, defence and air-traffic industries, academia and industry trainers), reveals several common themes. This paper seeks to scope the shape of future debate on competence requirements.
