Abstract :
This study uses three of the SSM/I channels to classify snow cover and precipitation on a global basis. The technique is based on the physical relationship between the antenna temperature measurements (Ta´ s) at low and high frequencies and their response to scattering materials such as snow cover or precipitation. An advantage of this technique is that it uses only three SSM/I channels (85V,22V,19V) for classification, as opposed to a technique like principal component analysis which uses all 7 SSM/I channels.
