Abstract :
The contents associated output (CASO) banyan network is proposed. It is a buffered banyan network characterized by priority control using routing information at the element switch. When head cells of two buffers are to be sent to the same output port (U) in a two-input, two-output element switch in the buffered banyan network, one of the buffers (A) is selected. Then, the other buffer (B) is searched for a cell which is to be sent to the other output port (D). If such a cell exists, that cell is transferred to the output port D at the same time that the head cell of the buffer A is transferred to the output port U. If not, only the head cell of buffer A is transferred. Simulation shows that the cell loss rate for the buffered banyan network with this algorithm is one hundredth of that for a conventional buffered banyan network when the offered load is 85%. It is concluded that the CASO-banyan network is suitable for the B-ISDN (broadband integrated services digital network) environment
