The influence on the cardiac function after excessive exercise is loaded: an evaluation by the way of electrocardiogram and echocardiogram before and after the disabled wheelchair marathon

Abstract :
The authors examined safety at the Oita international wheelchair marathon (42.195 km Wheelchair Run). They monitored the cardiac function and the metabolic function at the same time through blood and biochemical lab data analysis, electrocardiograms, Holter´s electrocardiograms and echocardiograms in the subjects during the race. Heart rate increased significantly from 66.0±12.6 to 99.0±10.8 beat/min. Systolic blood pressure increased significantly from 117.7±18.6 to 143±12.6 mmHg. Diastolic blood pressure decreased significantly from 70.0±10.4 to 45.0±8.8 mmHg. No changes were found in left ventricular function and size on the echocardiogram. No effects of dehydration were recognized after the race. The increase in plasma TAT complex concentrations was significantly greater from 2.2±0.4 to 4.0±0.6 ng/ml. WBC was significantly increased from 7.0±1.9 to 13.3±5.6×103/μ1. No other measurement items significantly changed after the race. The findings of arrhythmias (supraventricular premature count, ventricular premature count, or other block etc.) were not significantly recognized during the race. The findings of cardiac ischemic changes were not significantly recognized during the race, either. It is possible that those subjects who have hardly any atherosclerosis, if they enter the race after full training and well supplied with water, perform safely without a bad influence on the heart. But old age athletes with atherosclerosis should have a full medical check before the race in future
