Abstract
The issues which impede the deployment and interworking of LBRV (low-bit-rate voice) technologies in private networks and in public network special service applications are examined. It is pointed out that, in spite of the significant quality improvements LBRV is likely to remain restricted to private network applications until LBRV standards are developed LBRV is most likely to be offered in the public network in conjunction with ISDN (integrated services digital network) services. The decision to deploy voice compression technology within a private network is basically a three-way trade-off between transparency (e.g. voiceband data, voiceband tones, and tandeming), LBRV equipment costs, and savings in network transport costs
