Abstract :
Network performance is becoming ever more important as a component of customer Service Level Agreements (SLA), as converged solutions become more common. Different applications have different performance requirements, which are reflected in their demands on the network. This paper will allow the reader to understand the different performance requirements of different applications and how these will impact the network. It will consider what the chief characteristics of service performance are and how these are impacted by traffic patterns and applications. It will consider how Quality of Service mechanisms influence behaviour and how this fits within wider service level considerations, identifying how network performance is measured.
