Abstract :
This paper reviews operating temperatures within windings of cast coil small power distribution transformers. The paper considers how temperature instrumentation can be used to monitor winding temperature, to activate fans to provide higher loading (within rated temperature rise), to notify operations at selected temperature values, and to even reduce I/sup 2/R losses. The paper sets a criterion for loading small power distribution transformers to assure that insulation system life is not a limiting factor when seeking 40 to 45 year service in a continuous process industry (such as pulp and paper mills).<>
