Abstract :
Polarization-multiplexed DQPSK signals were implemented with high-speed and precise optical polarization compensation. Electronic chromatic dispersion compensation employing maximum-likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) receivers have been previously proposed to combat CD and PMD in the presence of ASE noise. In this paper we analyze the performance of a novel MLSE digital equalizer technology which is combined with FFE receivers in optical 40Gbit/s systems for reducing the CD and PMD. We investigate equalization over buried fibers having CD up to 3200ps/nm, PMD up to 45ps. This equals a distance beyond 200 km and thus increases the uncompensated transmission distance in applications like metro networks.
