Abstract :
It is noted that the SONET/SDH (synchronous optical network/synchronous digital hierarchy) transmission structure together with modern technological developments is offering opportunities for improved levels of flexibility within British Telecom´s (BT´s) transmission network. By incorporating a management methodology consistent with BT´s overall strategic network management plan, coordination of the flexibility function with other network operations is maximized and operational efficiency is ensured to meet the growing telecommunications needs of BT´s customers. Issues discussed include management philosophy, the control architecture, and interface and protocol considerations
