Abstract :
Time delay estimation via cross-correlation exhibits a nonlinear phenomenon in which estimator performance deteriorates rapidly below a certain signal to noise ratio (SNR). This is a consequence of the large variances associated with estimating cross-correlation functions at low SNRs. A method for predicting the estimator behaviour at low SNR´s, together with experimental results to confirm its validity, are given.
