Abstract :
The voltage-current characteristics of dodecyl benzene (DDB), transformer oil, mineral oil, and silicone oil have been investigated at different temperatures under ramp voltage (up until breakdown occurred) at a ramping speed of 100 V/s. Mercury was used as an electrode of sphere (Al or Cu)-plate (Hg) electrode systems. The work function of Hg derived from the electron emission (or charge injection) mechanisms was on the order of a few electronvolts, which was much larger than those of Al and Cu in the same case. This was attributed to the existence of few surface states because of Hg´s smooth surface caused by the liquid surface tension
