Abstract
Possible avenues for evolution of three fiber-to-the-pedestal architectures, i.e. the star, bus, and physical star/logical bus, are examined. Each architecture is analyzed on its technical and economic ability to evolve to potential future service offerings. The bus architecture does not appear to hold much promise as a viable solution for the distribution of future broadband service needs. Current analysis favors the placement of a star or logical bus in the distribution plant and the design of a pedestal which is capable of future service evolution. It is noted that the movement of fiber into the subscriber drop will ultimately hinge on the demand for broadband services
