Abstract
Prebreakdown processes in deionized water caused by strong electric fields were investigated using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The dynamics of the establishment of electrostriction pressure in the wave regime was investigated. A mechanism of electric strength breakdown based on near-cathode processes was identified. This mechanism is characterized by a large breakdown delay, related to the fact that the zones of intensive perturbations must cross the gap with sonic speed to realize a breakdown
